Purpose:
■ To help children understand their differences are what makes them special and unique.
Description:
During this talk, we ask the children to explore how they are different from others. We discuss
how our differences help define who we are. Using a metaphor of a treasure hunt, we encourage
the children to discover what makes them unique and extraordinary. We stress how important it
is to celebrate and be proud of our differences. We are all magnificent treasures that sparkle in
our own way. And, we need to appreciate each other for what makes us special and different.
Outcomes:
■ Children learn that their unique qualities and features are what makes them a "one-of-a-kind."
■ Children learn that everyone is different and to accept and value others for their unique
characteristics.
■ Children are motivated to explore their differences. This process can be fun and even
reaffirming.
■ Children learn to be proud of who they are and also to support other children’s differences.
Differences— "Each child is a magnificent work of art.
By celebrating their differences, children gain the freedom to
embrace one another for who they truly are."
