MAKING CHOICES

Purpose:

• To encourage children to try new activities in order to learn more about their strengths, talents and abilities.

Description:

During this talk we challenge children to explore their personal preferences. By posing questions that stimulate thinking, we get children to focus on their natural talents and abilities.

• What subjects do you like?
• Which don’t you like?
• Do you get discouraged when you’re not good at something?

We explain that usually we like something because it comes easy to us. But it’s ok not to be the best at everything. All of us have talents in some areas and not in others. Each choice we make offers the opportunity to get to know ourselves better. With each choice we learn more about our own personal preferences.

Outcomes:

• Children learn more about themselves by examining the choices they make.
• Children learn that everyone has different strengths and that it is ok not to be the best at everything.
• Children are motivated to try new activities without the fear of failure.
